Orange rolls

One of my favorite desserts is an orange bread roll. While this roll is absolutely delicious and can really be eaten at any time of the day, it's pretty time-consuming to make. However, I'd been craving it for a few months, so I decided to set aside a Saturday afternoon for it. Quick note, I don't regret it!

Dough:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 50 grams of Fleischmann's fresh active yeast
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 5 cups of flour

Directions:

  1. Heat the milk for 15 seconds in the microwave.
  2. Dissolve the Fleischmann's fresh active yeast in the warm milk (yes, that is a Tony the Tiger bowl)
  3. Mix the milk, yeast, eggs, sugar, salt, vegetable oil, and 3 cups of flour using a mixer.
  4. Once mixed, use your hands to slowly add the rest of the flour to the mix until it is no longer sticking to your hands (you may not need to use all 5 cups of flour).
  5. Shape the dough into a ball and rip a small piece out. Put this small piece in a glass full of water. Leave the rest of the dough in a big bowl, covered with a towel or Saran Wrap. The small piece of dough should sink to the bottom of the water glass. Once it rises to the top of the glass (about 30-40 minutes) the yeast has taken effect and the dough is ready to be rolled out.
  6. Cut the dough into 4 sections
  7. Roll out the first section

Filling:

  • Sugar
  • Butter
  1. Make the filling by combining 1 cup of sugar for every 2 tablespoons of butter. The more filling the better, so I make about 4 cups of sugar.
  2. Completely cover the rolled out dough with the sugar and butter filling, reaching the edges.
  3. Roll the dough.
  4. Cut the rolled up dough into 8 somewhat even sections.
  5. Place the cut up pieces in a pan.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°
  7. Repeat steps 2-5 for all the dough. Make more of the filling if necessary.
  8. Place the pans into the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until lightly brown. You don't want to overdo it as you'll be returning the rolls to the oven for 3-5 minutes later.

Orange glaze:

  • Juice from 5 oranges
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  1. Mix the orange juice and sugar in a pan and place it on low heat for 5 minutes.
  2. After removing the pans from the oven, drizzle the orange glaze over each roll. Make sure to drip some both on top of the roll and around it.
  3. Return the pans with the rolls to the over for 3-5 minutes.

This recipe should make 32 rolls. You can change the number made by cutting the rolled up dough into more or less pieces. Enjoy!!
