Why I'm Obsessed with PostSecret

PostSecret is a massive community project where people mail in their secrets written on a postcard. A number of these post cards are then posted online every Sunday morning. Recently, the founder, Frank Warren, gathered hundreds of these previously published and new postcard secrets into a book. When I began reading these more than 3 years ago, I loved them because they were mostly outrageous secrets. But the theme eventually evolved into a therapy session. Many secrets today deal with broken hearts and souls for numerous reasons.

People mail in secrets that only get published 2 years later, and then write in when they see their secret published with an update to the event. While at first I read through them for entertainment, it's now become my 5 minute therapy session every Sunday. Many secrets are ones I identify with or empathize with. Many make me stop to think of the person writing in, and what I would do in a similar situation. Over the past couple of years, I've slowly come to know myself, through various activities, including this read through every week.

One of my favorite parts of this community is how people react and reach out to one another to offer a helping hand of guiding words of encouragement. Frank attends many universities where he shares secrets that may have never been posted before. He also encourages people from the audience to participate and tell their secrets right then and there. Many comment that it is an incredibly liberating experience to get it out in the open and be accepted by those around them. While I haven't had the opportunity to attend an event yet, I make sure to keep an eye on the list that's posted every so often for an event near me.
